taking shape

The block of stone I started with is taking shape. It's pleasing to me in a funny way... and it's becoming more rewarding as I progress. Sort of like seeing a child develop and grow... in a way I am like a proud parent, proud of what my block of stone is becoming.

on the dark side

On Sunday, today, I decided I could start working the dark side. That is the inside curve of the tail piece. This also takes into account the narrowing of the 'head' as it goes down. I worked for 4 hours and this is what I got...not bad...it was nice having the smooth finish of the 'tongue' to thoughtfully run my hand over during rest stops. Actually, its kind of sweet to see the piece starting to take on some character.

First view if the colours within

On Saturday I felt I needed to work on the head so that I could later work on the inside of the curve without fear of breakage....what that means is I wanted to work the outside before the inside. A bonus was the opportunity to do a little finishing and a glimpse of what colours lay within the stone. As it turned out, the colours were quite pleasing however, the salmon colour and shape of the head suggest a tongue more than a head, so I may have to change how I label my pictures...

Warmer weather has arrived!

I finally got out to do some work yesterday as temperatures inched there way up to +3 degrees celsius. Today the forecast is for even better - a high of +7 degrees celsius! I will be taking pictures today and posting them when I get home. Also, I found some possible name ideas I had scribbled in a notebook(in no particular order);
'from the ground up'
'Green greeting'
'Flora Glory'
'Flora Spooning'

I know you have no idea what this hunk of marble will ultimately be so, the picture above is one half of the model (red clay) I am 'sort of' following. I hope this helps.....

Cold weather in Seoul

I






























I went to the studio in hopes of doing some carving but I just couldn't do it. Yes, it was cold. The cold bothers me some when I work for long stretches without moving much, but what really causes a problem is when the condensation in my dust mask freezes the exhaust port open in my mask. When this happens, I breath in and draw in dust from the open port instead of filtered air through the intake port. Not good. Today was also the third day of the Korean New Year, called 'Solleol'. There were three students on campus - yup, just three - and me. The language centre was open so I could get to my equipment but I felt that it would be weird grinding and hammering away in the studio at such a peaceful time. I thought it might be disrespectful, and I didn't want to be that. I just took some pics of my progress to date and left it at that. According to the forecast, it may be a few more days before I can get back to do some work. So, here is what it looks like as of today.

Hey, I haven't named it yet...it might be nice to call 'it', a name, or even give it a gender pronoun. If anyone has an idea for a name, let me know.
